CT

What is an CT scan?

MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging. MRI scans use a strong magnetic field and radio-waves to create high resolution images of your anatomy and any pathology or injury present with exquisite and precise detail.

CT Scan Patient Preparation

To allow the procedure to be performed as efficiently as possible, you may be asked to undergo the following preparations:

Head, Neck and Chest CT scans:
Nothing to eat for 2 hours prior to your appointment time. You may drink water only.

Abdomen and Pelvis CT scans:
Nothing to eat for 4 hours prior to your appointment time. You may drink water only. Depending on why the scan is to be performed, you may be given a dilute barium drink which enables the Radiologist to interpret your images easier. You will be asked to drink the diluted barium 45 minutes prior to entering the CT scan room.

Renal CT scans:
Please arrive for your appointment with a reasonably full bladder.

Sinus, facial bone CT scans:
No fasting is required. Please remove all head and neck jewellery.

Spine, arm, and leg CT scans:
No fasting is required. Please remove any relevant jewellery. Prior to scanning you may be asked to change into a gown. During scanning you will lie on a table which moves you into the circular shaped (doughnut) CT scanner. Scanning is very quick and you may be asked to hold your breath for a very short time. Some CT scans may require an injection of contrast medium (dye) into an arm. This allows imaging of blood vessels and various parts of the body and head. If required you will be asked to complete a questionnaire and give your consent.
